What’s In A Grandma Name?

Picking your grandma name is a big decision! So…just to prove how crazy I got as I neared 50. When my first grandchild came along, I was so excited and amazed, so happy for my beautiful daughter and her husband. A family. Then a second gorgeous girl arrived. I was over the top excited and ready to be the ‘cool granny’!

A Cool Grandma Name?

But then…the thought started creeping in. Wow…what will they call me? Cool, hip grandma names were never anything I’d thought about. Grandma? Maybe I like that…it sounds like an old-fashioned moniker, and I’m traditional but trendy. (See? Nuts.) Noni? No…no tradition of that name in my family; besides, it sounds kind of older. (See where I’m goin’ here? I was crazy.) Granny? Unthinkable…my blonde highlights simply won’t allow for it. (Sigh…)

So, I decided to leave picking a grandma name up to them. And guess what? Grammy! And somehow, it was perfect for me! Sort of old-fashioned meets tongue-in-cheek trendy (omg.) So., when my now 18-year old and 16-year-old granddaughters call me, it’s “Hey, Grammy Pammy!” Ha! My own designer Granny label! And according to Redtri.com, “grammy” is actually the 2nd most popular grandma name almost 2 decades later!

The truth is, they can call me whatever the heck they want, as long as they call me! It’s ok, I think I’m sane now that I’m in my 60’s. And being a grammy is completely awesome!
