Simple Signs of the Season: Eggnog & Gratitude

Today was the first of the simple signs of the season that make this month my favorite. Thanksgiving is my absolute best day of the year. Our family is very nuclear… It is just myself, my husband our kids and grandkids. Together, a total of about nine people who very much enjoy being together. We have shared Thanksgiving in the past with family or friends, and it has always been a wonderful experience…I always cook a huge traditional dinner, prepare a fancy table, and we stuff ourselves and then do something fun. This year, it’s going to be a Thanksgiving dessert contest. I can’t wait to see what my kids come up with. (My dessert entry will be one of my favorites from Ruth Reichel’s book…she’s my food hero.) All fun…nothing like a good Thanksgiving food coma!

But the Thanksgiving holiday for me begins with the little things, like eggnog, molasses-spice cookies, and my favorite autumn recipe, Sausage and Apples. Today in upstate New York is a slightly wet, wickedly blustery day. So blustery the dogs have run to the window a couple of times to watch the leaves blow.

As I begin my cleaning in anticipation of our guests, I’m treating myself to one of my favorite things: fresh local eggnog from the Battenkill Valley Creamery in Salem NY. This is a family business that puts quality first…I buy their milk, chocolate milk (to die for) and eggnog. They do stuff home delivery too…very cool.

So the comfort today is a little dusting, poking the fire, taking the dogs out for a good run…ignoring the onslaught of bad news on TV, and an eggnog break. The perfect November Sunday.

What are you doing today? Enjoy!
